Capability Enhancement
When I first started talking to Outrider it was mainly through a recognition that I had a big portfolio, our business was growing and I simply didn't have the time to give our technology capability the appropriate focus it needed. I think this is a common problem in medium sized businesses and seeking out and then finding the right help is very important.
Really I think my first need was to re-establish a technology position that would allow me to have more valuable conversations with the business stakeholders. Much of the technology focus had become very operational, there wasn't a clear path forward and the lingering question was always - can technology help our business grow and develop more effectively. The answer was intuitively "yes" but I needed more detail, basically I needed a plan showing how.
The process Outrider followed to assist me was rooted in understanding my business operation first and then connecting back to the technology. Even the risk analysis carried out focused primarily on potential business problems and subsequently linking them to possible technology causes. This made it easy to socialise with my peers as I wasn't talking about things they didn't understand or were prone to ignore when I raised technology as a budget or strategic item. The roadmap we settled on focuses on a mix of strategic items designed to improve the prospects of my operation over time, longer term investments if you will, alongside things that I would consider good hygiene activities making sure our day to day use of technology was safe and sound.
Overall the engagement with Outrider was seamless, at times provocative in a good way and fun and I am already in the process of getting them involved in solving some of the bigger technology challenges we identified. Catherine D (Director)
